Frequently Asked Questions

Heating, radiators, thermostats and cooling — the ones that come up most often.

Questions we are asked

Ten things people ask first.

Will you try to sell me a whole new system?

It is the most common complaint about this trade, so we work the other way round. We inspect the system, establish what is genuinely wrong, and only then set out the options.

If a repair will do the job, that is what we will recommend. If a component really is finished, we will explain why and what the alternatives are.

How do I know the work has been done properly?

Before leaving we run the system and check it: that it reaches temperature, that the radiators or units all behave, that no joint we made is leaking, and that the controls do what they are meant to do.

We then go through what was done, what was set and what to keep an eye on. If any part of that handover does not sit right with you, raise it while we are still there.

One radiator stays cold. What is behind that?

The usual causes are trapped air, a system out of balance, a valve stuck or set wrongly, or debris restricting the flow. From the outside they look identical, and each one needs a different remedy.

That is precisely why we check rather than assume: the cause decides whether you need a repair, a balance, or a replacement radiator.

What does a thermostat cost, and could I fit one myself?

Controls vary widely in price and in what they must connect to, so we quote per unit once we know which one suits your system. A single figure would not be honest across different systems.

On fitting it yourself: a like-for-like replacement is within reach of a careful DIY job. Changing the type of control, or wiring one where none existed, is where it starts to get expensive when it goes wrong.

What goes into an air-conditioning job, and where can the outdoor unit sit?

It needs an indoor position with clear airflow, an outdoor position with the clearances the unit requires, a route between the two for insulated pipework, and somewhere for the condensate to drain.

The outdoor unit is normally the constraint. We settle where it can go before quoting, because a plan that cannot be built is not worth pricing.

How long will it take, and can we stay at home while it happens?

It comes down to the job itself. A thermostat swap is a short visit; a system installation runs to days rather than hours. Radiator work is usually taken room by room.

For anything longer than a short visit we agree a schedule first, including the periods when water or heating will be off, so you can plan around them.

How often does a system need servicing?

Once a year is the usual rhythm for a domestic system and the interval we work to. An annual visit catches the small things — a seal starting to go, pressure drifting, a valve stiffening — before they turn into a call-out in the middle of winter.

Are parts still available for older equipment?

Often yes, sometimes no, and occasionally only an equivalent rather than the original part. It varies by manufacturer and by the age of the unit.

We check availability before recommending a repair on older equipment, so that you are not left with a repair that cannot be finished.

Is it worth planning heating and cooling at the same time?

Yes, and it is usually worth it. Pipe routes, drainage, wall positions and where units sit indoors all interact, and thinking about them at the same time avoids the awkward compromises that come from bolting one on later.

How do we get hold of you, and where do you cover?

Call +44 7966 550523 or email services@thermatechhome.services. Tell us what the system is doing and roughly where you are, and we will say whether it is a job we take on and arrange a visit if it is.

We take on residential properties, and visits are booked in advance.

Anything not covered here, ring or write and we will go through it with you.

Not covered here?

Describe what the system is doing and we will say where we would start.
